Looking for some support and ideas for teaching the KUSP related to poetry? Check out the slide deck (PDF) full of teaching suggestions and additional resources. One of the more accessible types of lyric poetry is the ODE. You will find a slide deck explaining the ode, as well as a planner for students to use to help them write their own odes to ordinary objects.
As with all assignments, students do best when they understand the success criteria. Consider co-creating a ‘Guide to Success‘ as part of the learning process, when asking students to craft their own poetry.
Connections can be made between poetry and your exploration of hybrid texts! After students research a concept (for another subject area perhaps), ask them to write an abecedarian poem to share their research in an interesting way.
