About this Resource
This video and mentor text bibliography is intended to assist teachers in becoming familiar with using mentor texts in their writing instruction. As mentioned in the video, the list of selected texts is not exhaustive. Any texts that inspire improvement to the writer’s crafting toolkit can be seen as ‘mentors’ to their work.
Key Points
- Mentor texts are concrete examples of the techniques we want students to learn
to use in their writing. They can be published works, the teacher’s writing, or
other students’ writing. - Students need to learn to read like writers. We respond first as readers before
responding as writers noticing and naming techniques used by others. - Carl Anderson outlined a 5 step process for teaching with mentor texts.
