About this Resource
This video is part of the Good Practices in Writing Series. It provides an overview of what the instructional time in the writing block might look like.
Key Points:
- Comprehensive literacy instruction includes reading, word work (phonemic
awareness, phonics and morphology) instruction. - A process approach to teaching writing is based on research and is part of the
new ELAL curriculum. The writing process consists of rehearsing, drafting,
revision, editing, finished/published piece. - Mini lessons are short bursts of explicit instruction. There is a structure to them:
connection, teaching point, teaching, active engagement, and a link. - Conferring and small group instruction allows for differentiation.
