{"id":7233,"date":"2022-08-29T14:34:22","date_gmt":"2022-08-29T20:34:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/?p=534"},"modified":"2022-08-29T14:34:22","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T20:34:22","slug":"top-5-tips-for-curriculum-implementation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aplc.ca\/fr\/top-5-tips-for-curriculum-implementation\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 5 Tips for Curriculum Implementation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to some quality feedback on a recent session of mine, I created a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top 5 Tips for Curriculum Implementation for Teachers and Administrators <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in hopes that this might ease the stress just a little.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/For-Curriculum-Implementation-300x300.png\" alt=\"Top 5 Tips\" class=\"wp-image-535\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Tip One<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><b>Teachers are responsible for the HOW.<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We get the WHY (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.alberta.ca\/dataset\/270e1a34-3338-461d-b761-c761f943fa2d\/resource\/5a510797-645e-419f-acbd-6a9dfdb41cd0\/download\/edc-mo-28-2020-student-learning.pdf\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ministerial Order<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/open.alberta.ca\/dataset\/f3fb3059-fdec-4c62-89b7-a34eb9d33c3c\/resource\/0a51ffa3-76bf-4f8b-a31c-7481eb2fba5c\/download\/edc-guiding-framework-curriculum-development-2020.pdf\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guiding Framework<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the WHAT (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/curriculum.learnalberta.ca\/curriculum\/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subject area curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alberta Education<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The HOW remains the teacher&#8217;s responsibility, as outlined in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teacher Quality Standard<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>The Teaching Quality Standard<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em><strong>Quality teaching occurs when the teacher\u2019s ongoing analysis of the context, and the teacher\u2019s decisions about which pedagogical knowledge and abilities to apply, result in optimum learning for all students.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is explained in greater detail as we examine the competencies and indicators that support the standard. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are responsible for planning, instruction, and assessment so that we are meeting the learning needs of every student. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> create and sustain inclusive learning environments. And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teachers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> develop and apply foundational knowledge about First Nations, M\u00e9tis, and Inuit to benefit all students. In other words, <\/span><b><i>it is up to teachers<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to interpret the WHY and the WHAT into meaningful learning opportunities for the students they serve.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Tip Two<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><b>Ground yourself in quality instruction.<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a moment to reflect upon the lessons or units you have done with your students that created that delightful hum of learning in your classroom. Which activities naturally encourage engagement by all students? Which lessons started with strengths and built new ideas from there?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These quality instructional practices will likely find a place within the new curriculum outcomes. While you are reading through each subject area, start thinking about where these quality teaching lessons or classroom structures (such as math warm-ups, morning messages, daily read-alouds, and\/or teaching games for understanding in physical education \u2013 to name a few) might align and support the new outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Tip Three<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><b>KUSPs must be attached to the outcome.&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-536\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Free-clip-art-moving-van-clipart-300x255.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-536\"\/><figcaption>KUSPs move together<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you move into your planning, please remember that the <\/span><b>K<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nowledge, <\/span><b>U<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nderstanding, and <\/span><b>S<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kills &amp; <\/span><b>P<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rocedures must remain attached to the learning outcome. Teachers are obviously welcome to move around learning outcomes\/KUSPs as they plan cross-curricular learning activities or iterative subject outcomes mapping; we just need to remember that they travel as a unit. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may want to think of it this way: Any of the Skills &amp; Procedures can be invited over to hang with a different group of KUSPs, but they must always be chaperoned by the learning outcome. This ensures that the context offered by the outcome is not lost when we are looking at one particular part of the KUSPs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Tip Four<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><b>Remember it is a YEAR LONG process&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is ZERO need or expectation that teachers and administrators have this all figured out in the first month. While the space of uncertainty or the unknown is often uncomfortable for most of us to occupy, going <\/span><b><i>slowly<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so we can fully understand the curriculum, engage in collaborative conversations with our colleagues to help align expectations, and maintain quality instruction at the forefront of our work is essential for successful implementation. Take your time. Exhale.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Tip Five<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><b>Don\u2019t panic; you\u2019ve got this.&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tip is directly connected to the tip that started this list; teachers are responsible for the HOW. We have the collective professional efficacy to achieve successful curriculum implementation. Period. Trust in your abilities as a professional. Surround yourself with positive, supportive colleagues. And remember to reach out and ask for help when you need it. The educators that work at your local consortia office are ready to support you with whatever you need.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>BONUS Tip for Administrators (and teachers too).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><b>The minutes of instruction HAVE NOT changed.&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/GettyImages_1216112779.0-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"time\" class=\"wp-image-539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/GettyImages_1216112779.0-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/GettyImages_1216112779.0-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/GettyImages_1216112779.0-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/GettyImages_1216112779.0.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minimum hours of instruction and time allocations are outlined in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.alberta.ca\/dataset\/d119dba4-36cd-4e41-927b-b436fb2e75b1\/resource\/2dff2b0e-f9e5-49c9-81ad-86ee34e53fbe\/download\/edc-guide-to-education-2021-2022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guide to Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Recommended time allocations for elementary students are offered in percentages. Daily physical activity (DPA) continues to be an expectation for 30 minutes each day.
