Kari once again proves to be a valuable resource for anyone who loves books and is always on the lookout for new additions to their own TBR piles or classroom libraries. She brought everything from non-fiction to graphic novels to picture books to hybrid texts (includes elements of fiction and non-fiction). There is something for everyone in this list!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5096\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Accountable by Dashka Slater<\/strong> is written for everyone who is using social media. \u00a0Students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community members would be well served to read this book as it shares the fallout story from a single Instagram account with all 12 followers in the school and community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-2-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5097\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Probability of Everything<\/strong> is a middle-grade title that could easily extend into upper grades written by Canadian author Sarah Everett that explores what you might or might not do when faced with a dangerous HUGE event. \u00a0Everett recently received the Governor General&#8217;s Literary Award in the category Young People&#8217;s Literature for the book. \u00a0A real page turner with a WHOA I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING plot twist that will have you going back to look for clues. \u00a0(No jumping ahead allowed).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-4-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5098\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-4-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Seals are Jerks<\/strong> is a picture book with a bonus. \u00a0Jared Chapman has added significant value to the book, bringing it into the category of hybrid text in that it is fiction paired with a non-fiction section at the end which explores information about Antarctica. \u00a0Teachers might see a place for this text in Living Systems in science as it explores the environment and food chain conversations (including peanut butter and jelly sandwiches), as well as ELAL 5 and 6 as an example of hybrid texts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-5-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5099\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Charlie offered another example of hybrid texts, a book written by Joyce Sidman entitled, <strong>Winter Bees<\/strong>. Additional books that fit into this genre can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Hybrid-Text-Book-List.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5100\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ten Word Tiny Tales to Inspire and Unsettle<\/strong> by Joseph Coelho, an award-winning author who lives in England, would work for all ages and helps inspire writing (and reading). The illustrations come from a group of artists and challenge readers to flesh out, add, and build upon the 10-word tiny tales from each of the illustrations in the book. \u00a0Kari shares some of the spreads in the book speaking to how you might expand on the 10 words accompanying that picture and take it in 1000 directions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-7-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5102\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-7-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Joseph Coelho has also recently written the YA Novel in verse, \u00a0<strong>The Boy Lost in the Maze<\/strong> (Due to be released in March 2024). \u00a0The book has been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal in writing. His other titles include, <strong>Thank You<\/strong> illustrated by Sam Usher,<strong> Zombierella: Fairytales Gone Bad<\/strong> illustrated by Freya Hartas, <strong>The Girl Who Became a Tree: A Story Told in Poems<\/strong>, <strong>Luna Loves Dance<\/strong> illustrated by Fiona Lumbers, <strong>My Beautiful Voice<\/strong> illustrated by Allison Colpys, <strong>How to Write Poems<\/strong> and many more.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph is England&#8217;s Children&#8217;s Laureate awarded once every two years to a &#8220;writer or illustrator of children&#8217;s books to celebrate outstanding achievement in their field.&#8221; The role promotes the importance of children\u2019s literature, reading, creativity and storytelling while promoting the right of every child to enjoy a lifetime of books and stories.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5128 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/obasaan-210x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/obasaan-210x300.jpeg 210w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/obasaan-717x1024.jpeg 717w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/obasaan-768x1097.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/obasaan-1075x1536.jpeg 1075w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/obasaan-1434x2048.jpeg 1434w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/obasaan.jpeg 1575w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Obaasan&#8217;s Boots<\/strong> &#8211; This beautiful picture book opened the door for Kari to reflect on her own upbringing and her Obaasan (Japanese for Grandma). \u00a0Recommended for ages 9 &#8211; 12 but can be read by anyone. \u00a0A family story, cousins who go to a family reunion at Obaasan&#8217;s house. \u00a0The connections of families and memories surrounding food and then the cousins having an opportunity to hear the stories of the family, how and why they have moved. \u00a0The book has pictures of the real life of the Obaasan upon whom the book is based.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5104\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mark Sakamoto&#8217;s book <strong>Shizue&#8217;s Path<\/strong> is a picture book that speaks to the importance of sharing the more difficult elements and events of our life. \u00a0The book includes a detailed timeline at the back, another illustrated hybrid book.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5105\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-10-204x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-10-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-10.jpg 652w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A middle-grade novel from the Canadian author, Leslie Gentile, that is told through the eyes of <strong>Shamus: The Urban Rez Dog P.I<\/strong>. \u00a0Kari hopes that this book can become a series and maybe even a cartoon series. ( *cough cough* CBC, are you listening?)\u00a0 There is a lot of humour and silliness in the book as the author attempts to slide the difficult and challenging pieces into the story.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5106\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ryan La Sala provides another thriller for high school students and Young Adults.\u00a0 Falling into the Horror genre, the writing, in Kari&#8217;s opinion, is brilliant, drawing the reader into the book as well as the lives of the characters. The adventure in <strong>Beholder<\/strong> begins from the opening sentence (written in second person),<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThe Sunday night of the party, a few hours before everyone dies, a girl with bleached bangs is telling you all about her future.\u201d \u00a0In Kari&#8217;s words, &#8220;terrifying but beautifully written&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5107\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-12-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-12-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-12.jpg 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Transitioning to graphic novels, Kari shared a couple of titles starting with a book written for middle to high school (any even beyond). \u00a0Scott Chantler&#8217;s <strong>Squire &amp; Knight<\/strong> has a great message that reaches many levels of complexity if the reader takes the time to &#8220;listen&#8221;. \u00a0The book includes some of the raw sketches and some information shared by Scott on the process he undertakes in writing the book.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5108\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-13-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-13-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-13.jpg 666w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A collection of short stories presented in graphic novel form is the second offering in this area and illustrates (pun intended) the need for more of this form of literature. \u00a0Neal Shusterman and illustrator Andr\u00e9s Vera Martinez have created <strong>Courage to Dream: Tales of Hope in the Holocaust<\/strong>. \u00a0Each story depicts a different story of the Holocaust and folded in Jewish folklore into the narrative presenting a &#8220;what if&#8230;&#8221; that could have changed history that then folds back toward the factual historical events of each story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5110\" src=\"https:\/\/arpdc.ab.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-18-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-18-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-18-723x1024.jpg 723w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-18-768x1088.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aplc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Image-18.jpg 1059w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Tales of Hope<\/em> reminds Charlie of &#8220;<strong>This Place: 150 Years Retold <\/strong>by Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm <span class=\"author notFaded\" data-width=\"\"><span class=\"contribution\"><span class=\"a-color-secondary\">(Author), <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"author notFaded\" data-width=\"\">Sonny Assu <span class=\"contribution\"><span class=\"a-color-secondary\">(Author), <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"author notFaded\" data-width=\"\">Brandon Mitchell <span class=\"contribution\"><span class=\"a-color-secondary\">(Author), <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"author notFaded\" data-width=\"\">Rachel Qitsualik-Tinsley <span class=\"contribution\"><span class=\"a-color-secondary\">(Author), <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"author notFaded\" data-width=\"\">Sean Qitsualik-Tinsley <span class=\"contribution\"><span class=\"a-color-secondary\">(Author), <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"author notFaded\" data-width=\"\">David A.
